A public intervention on the Swakopmund Jetty, April 2012. (Namibia)
In order to raise the local and global awareness about the dangers of the exploitation and destruction of the Namib desert and coastal area through mining and other proposed industrial developments, I initiated this public art action based on Munch’s painting “The Scream”. During the hour before sunset I asked passersby to re-enact the scene of the original painting to show their concern for our Namibian environment and have photographed their ‘screams’, while the whole action has been captured on film by Steffen Holzkamp of Onexa A+V.

In 2011 I have painted my own version of the Scream (you can see it here). Munch’s “Scream” painting has always reminded me of the jetty in Swakopmund where I grew up, and slowly the idea developed for this art action. The title came from what Munch has said about his inspiration for the painting.
“I was walking along a path with two friends—the sun was setting — suddenly the sky turned blood red — I paused, feeling exhausted, and leaned on the fence —there was blood and tongues of fire above the blue-black fjord and the city — my friends walked on,and I stood there trembling with anxiety — and I sensed an infinite scream passing through nature.”

Moin Frau Rust, habe Sie gerade im Radio gehört – Umweltzerstörung, ein Thema, welches auch mich sehr bewegt, die surrealen Steine bringen es beeindruckend als Thema, – für mich ist nur eine der Seiten (und so kam es ja auch im Radio von der Redakteurin rüber), “wie demokratisch ist Namibia..”, nie wird die Frage nach Demokratie und Umweltzerstörung in Deutschland gestellt – gewiß mögen die Verhältnisse in anderen Ländern der Welt schwieirg sein, aber wie ein Bekannter vor einiger Zeit zu mir sagte: “Bananrepublik sind wir selbst.” und das wird leider immer wieder “vergessen” – mit freundlichem Gruß A. sie haben völlig recht. In Namibia, schütteln wir häufig über Dinge den Kopf und sagen: Only in Namibia/Africa. Seit ich regelmässig länger hier in Deutschland bin, denke ich oft, das einiges sogar besser läuft in Namibia und muss eh immer wieder feststellen, das Dinge wie Korruption und Machtmissbrauch leider ein menschliches Problem ist, und nicht ein Länder oder Gruppenspezifisches. Leider ist es in der kurzen Zeit eines Interviews sehr schwierig in Detail auf Dinge einzugehen oder zu hinterfragen, und da muss auch die Redakteurin versuchen, sich auf den Fokus des Interviews zu konzentrieren. Deswegen bin ich auch dankbar, das Bilder mehr als 1000 Worte sprechen. Liebe Grüsse und Danke!
