2022 Pause (It is the pause that brings thought to life.)

11th International Forest Art Path / 11. Internationaler Waldkunstpfad, Darmstadt, Germany

Pause (It is the pause that brings thought to life.), Site-responsive art installation by Imke Rust for the 20th aniversary of the International Forest Art Path in Darmstadt.

(Deutscher Text unten) The pause encourages us to consciously perceive the dynamic state of being in-between as an energetic process of change in which many possible directions are open.

In these times of strong upheaval on so many levels, be it ecological, social or political, it is important to pause to get clarity about what wants to change and what our role can be in it.

“It is the pause that brings thought to life.”
(Training the Senses: Tim Ingold – the knowing body, YouTube lecture)

My art and thoughts have been greatly inspired and enriched in recent years by the books of anthropologist Tim Ingold (especially The Life of Lines and Correspondences) and biologist Andreas Weber (Alles fühlt und Lebendigkeit – eine erotische Ökologie).

I am particularly attracted to Ingold’s idea of ‘in-betweeness’. Not the static point between two places, but the dynamic state of being-in-between. Not here and not there, but in the energetic process of change in which many possible directions are open.
