A socially engaged, eco-poetic, participatory performance rooted in conceptual art and relational aesthetics, drawing on myth-making and posthumanist ecological thinking.

Adopt-A-Cloud situates itself at the intersection of socially engaged art, eco-poetics, and participatory performance. Drawing on traditions of relational aesthetics and conceptual art, the work transforms the fleeting presence of clouds into a site of communal care and imaginative responsibility.

By inviting participants to “adopt” a cloud—complete with certificate, drawing, and an oracular narrative—the project reframes environmental awareness through intimate, mythopoetic gestures rather than didactic instruction. It echoes the legacies of eco-art and ritual performance, while proposing a contemporary, post-anthropocenic sensibility in which humans re-enter a reciprocal relationship with the natural world.

Through humor, tenderness, and collective imagination, Adopt-A-Cloud opens a temporary social space where ecological stewardship becomes personal, playful, and profoundly symbolic.

CALL: In many parts of the world, clouds have become shy and rare. Or they maraud in wild packs and flood the land….

We humans have forgotten our role as guardians of nature and lost our personal connection to the clouds and other natural beings.

Namibian artist Imke Rust has collected over 333 lonely clouds that can now be adopted by you.

By adopting a cloud, you take on the responsibility to honour, cherish and care for your cloud. Through this conscious appreciation, you help to restore the natural balance.

Die namibische Künstlerin Imke Rust hat über 333 einsame Wolken gesammelt, die nun von Ihnen adoptiert werden können.

Mit einer Patenschaft übernehmen Sie die Verantwortung ihre Wolke zu ehren, zu hegen und zu pflegen. Durch diese bewusste Wertschätzung helfen sie das natürliche Gleichgewicht wieder zu erlangen.

By adopting a cloud, we reinforce our personal connection to our environment. We symbolically take responsibility for something intangible but important. In doing so, we remind ourselves that by our very being we have an influence on the whole.

Durch die Adoption einer Wolke bestärken wir unsere persönliche Verbindung zu unserer Umwelt. Wir übernehmen symbolisch die Verantwortung für etwas nicht Greifbares aber Wichtiges. Dadurch erinnern wir uns daran, das wir allein durch unser Sein schon einen Einfluss auf das Ganze haben.

Performance / participatory art action

In her performative and participatory project Adopt-a-Cloud / Cloud Adoption Station, Namibian artist Imke Rust invites participants to rediscover a poetic and caring relationship with the forces of nature.


Observing that clouds have become increasingly rare or unpredictable in many parts of the world, Rust reflects on humanity’s forgotten role as guardian of nature and our fading sense of kinship with natural phenomena.

The artist collected over 333 “lonely clouds,” which were made available for symbolic adoption during the four-day performance. Each adoption constituted an act of renewed attention and ecological empathy, emphasizing personal responsibility and reverence for and relationship with the natural world.


Participants—called Cloud Guardians—received an analog photograph of their chosen cloud, an adoption certificate, care instructions, and a story from Rust’s Cloud Oracle. In exchange, they filled out an adoption form and drew their cloud for identification—a poetic gesture that transforms an ephemeral meteorological phenomenon into a site of shared imagination, care, and connection.

Konzept:

Mit der performativen und partizipativen Arbeit Adopt-a-Cloud / Wolkenadoptionsstation lädt die namibische Künstlerin Imke Rust das Publikum ein, eine poetische und zugleich verantwortungsvolle Beziehung zu den Kräften der Natur neu zu entdecken.

Ausgehend von der Beobachtung, dass Wolken in vielen Teilen der Welt seltener oder unberechenbarer geworden sind, verweist die Künstlerin auf den Verlust unserer symbolischen und spirituellen Verbindung zu natürlichen Erscheinungen.

Rust hat über 333 „einsame Wolken“ gesammelt, die im Rahmen der Performance zur Adoption freigegeben wurden. Besucher:innen konnten eine individuelle Wolke anhand eines Fotos auswählen und ihre Patenschaft übernehmen. Dadurch wird das Bewusstsein für persönliche Beziehung, Fürsorge, Achtung und wechselseitige Verbundenheit mit der Natur gestärkt.

Jede:r Wolkenhüter:in erhielt ein analoges Foto der adoptierten Wolke, eine Urkunde, Hinweise zur Pflege sowie eine individuelle Erzählung aus Rusts Wolkenorakel.
Im Gegenzug wurden Informationen zur neuen „Wolkenpartnerschaft“ festgehalten und zum achtsamen Kennenlernen eine eigene Zeichnung der Wolke angefertigt und dem Archiv der Künstlerin überlassen – als poetisches Dokument eines symbolischen Akts des bewußten wieder-in-Verbindung treten zwischen Mensch und Natur.
