2019 Roots and Branches

In this series I am exploring the connection between the self and nature and the environment that shaped us. How we adapt to new surroundings, cutting old roots and growing new ones.

I work in a combination of different media, where specific materials and processes underpin the concept. Charcoal and red forestry markers on paper link to both the Namibian bush and the German forest. Braided artificial black hair points to my African home country and the complicated situation of being a white African of German descent. Different printing techniques are combined with drawing referencing the interrelatedness of all life and expression.

Part of this series was first shown at the group exhibition Zusammen Wachsen at the Kulturhaus Karlshorst, Berlin in 2019.
